What to see in Sal
Pedra de Lume: an ancient volcanic crater with an artificial tunnel excavated in 1804 for the purpose of extracting salt. The bottom of the crater is at the sea level, allowing the infiltration of sea water even though it is located about one kilometre from the beach.
The saltpans: a true historical attraction located about one kilometre from the city.
Vila des Espargos: for those in Santa Maria, the Vila offers pleasant accommodations, especially for its varied and spontaneous vegetation.
Palmeira: the port of Palmeira, where cargo ships are allowed to dock, also boasts a desalination facility and numerous lobster farms that offer excellent prices.
Cuisine
Cape Verdian cuisine, with its strong African origins, is rich and varied. The national specialty is the tasty catchupa, prepared with corn, beans, pork, manioc, sweet potatoes, and aromatic herbs.
Other typical specialties of the archipelago of Cape Verde are the fantastic fish barbecues with crayfish, lobster, octopus, “buzio” and tuna: all delicacies you won’t want to miss. Cape Verdian cuisine also includes sweets and tea, as well as the famous grog, a brandy made with sugar cane.
Shopping
Typical crafts you can purchase include ceramics, hand-dyed batiks, coconut sculptures, costume jewellery, compositions with shells finished by hand, rag dolls, and sand paintings. There are plenty of open-air markets where you can buy curiosities, like surprising tin toys, aromatic spices, and hand-made terracotta objects.

Sal Island, the true gateway to the archipelago of Cape Verde, boasts an international airport (the well-known “Amílcar Cabral”), which has made it the main tourist destination of the archipelago. Its name is due to its particular geological conformation rich in salt, which over past centuries represented the main economic resource of the island. Today, spending a vacation in Cape Verde and, in particular, visiting Sal Island means above all enjoying long stretches of fine sandy shore along an inviting, crystalline, emerald sea.
This spectacular landscape of Sal Island is born of the suggestive contrast between the volcanic nature of the island and the turquoise blue of the ocean: the most beautiful spots of this island exploit this stark contrast, like Santa Maria, the area of the ancient saltpans that offer marvellous stretches of beaches and sea as its main attraction.
Cape Verde is a land that is envied and desired for its strategic position in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The population of Cape Verde numbers about 350,000 distributed over a total 4033 square kilometres on 10 islands of volcanic origins that together form the archipelago of the same name situated 500 km from the Senegalese coast.
Visiting the archipelago of the Cape Verde islands is a unique experience: , S. Antao sal, Sao Vicente, Santa Luzia, Sao Nicolau, Santiago, Brava, Maio, Boavista and Fogo are all places that offer thrills even to the most discriminating souls. Each island is different from the next, inhabited by hospitable Creoles and lively children, with rugged territories, parched steppes, lush green valleys furrowed by rare springs, deserted beaches, and stretches of lava.
But the sea is where you will discover the secret treasure of the islands of Cape Verde: a stunningly rich marine fauna made possible by the purity of the water, the climate, and the presence of underwater shelves. There is an abundance of species: bream, sawfish, bonito, moray eels, black angler fish, tuna, dolphins, sperm whales, killer whales, and others, just to name a few.
It is precisely this fantastic scenario that favoured the ambitious project of “Cotton Bay” on Sal Island, which aims at enhancing this spectacular nature and all its potential by importing numerous varieties of flowers and tropical plants to enrich the dreamy gardens of the future real estate complex. In this way it will be possible to enjoy visions of vermilion bougainvillea, robust cacti, and small tropical palmettes, together with the famous red hibiscus, symbol of Cape Verde itself. The volcanic hermitage will fill with new scents and sensations to inebriate the guests who intend to spend their vacation on Sal Island to discover a secluded and dizzying sea and fabulous vegetation.
In 1991, Cape Verde became a Democratic, Multi-party, Presidential Republic following free elections. During its first government administration, Cape Verde actuated a reformist policy, privatizing some sectors of the economy to stimulate the flow of real estate investments and private initiatives.

MUSIC
Making music is a fundamental joy for the inhabitants of Cape Verde. The timbres of traditional instruments like shells or iron rods, the accordion, Tabanka drums, and other acoustic instruments are appealingly matched with modern music. These combinations gave rise to the “coladeira”, the “funana”, and the “mazurka”, the warm and joyous rhythms that express the life blood of the people of Cape Verde.
During holidays, the entire archipelago becomes a lively dance floor where Cape Verdians dance to the sound of their wildest rhythms for the entertainment of fascinated tourists who are lucky enough to spend an unforgettable vacation on Sal Island.
The most typical music of Cape Verde is the "morna", characterised by languid and slow rhythms, brimming with sultry sensations of distance, nostalgia, and separation. The Creole term for this music that most closely describes this music is “sodade”, which expresses sentiments of longing and love.
The best-known morna singer in the world is certainly Cesária Évora, originally from the Island of São Vicente and considered the leading ambassador of the music of Cape Verde.
